Mathijs Adriaan Heyligers, born in Holland, moved to Italy in 1975 after graduating from Scientific Highschool. His study of violinmaking starts at the International School of Violinmaking in Cremona under Maestro Giorgio Cè. In 1977 he moves to the Violinmakingschool in Parma where he becomes in 1980 his diploma of Master Violinmaker under Renato Scrollavezza and Pietro Sgarabotto. Contemporarily he studies violin at the Conservatory of Music "A. Boito" in Parma with the Finish violinist Satu Jalas, granddaughter of Jean Sibelius. He studies restoration under Gimpel Solomon and Bruce Carlson.
This combination of technical knowledge and practical experience with the bowed string instruments enables him to have a profound understanding of the needs of every musician. Each of his instruments is made on specific request, based on models of the most important Master Violinmakers of the past and with the use of the antique methods of the traditional art of Cremonese Violinmaking.
His instruments are played by concert-artists all around the world and are regularly used for important CD recordings.
Famous concert-artists such as Itzak Perlman, Ruggiero Ricci and Shlomo Mintz have recognised and praised the quality of his work.
His contacts with restorers all over the world are of fundamental importance for his activity as restorer of antique instruments.
Among others he dedicates much attention to the restoration and re-transformation of original baroque instruments. Many prestigious instruments have gone through his hands.Heyligers has received important prices in international Violinmaking Competitions such as Salt Lake City (USA 1982), Kassel (Germany 1983) and Cremona. His instruments have been shown on exhibitions around the world. He has collaborated on numerous musical projects, publications, radio and television programs.
He is founder member and former Vice-President of the Consortium of Violinmakers "A. Stradivari" of Cremona and founder member of the association "Liuteria Parmense".
